This week Miss Low’s 8th grade careers class had the opportunity to zoom with and gain knowledge from two individuals from different career clusters. Curtis Sturgill from Morton Building in Onawa talked about the education and training he has. He discussed his occupation description and the  opportunities available at Morton Building. Curtis gave some great advice about staying involved in high school and in your community when you grow up.   Alex Flanigan, RN/NP from Unity Point and former MVAO graduate zoomed with the 8th grade class to share about her career in the NICU. Alex shared about her education and the different requirements to become a RN/NP. She reminded our students that hard work and perseverance is a huge part in achieving your dreams! Thank you to both of these individuals for taking time out of your busy day to answer the questions of our students!

The next two weeks will be max outs and fitness testing. Kids must record and send to Gill or Kahl. Valid marks for proper form! The board and PLT4M has instructions for them! We’ll also be sending out messages. In anticipation of athletes forgetting to record and send please remind them that’s the only way it’ll count for the boards. The recording is intended for athletes during the day to make sure we’re consistent, fair, and their marks are valid! Coach Kahl and Mr. Gill will be in before and after school. In order for the record boards and clubs to have integrity we must be consistent in how we count these max outs. After much discussion with Mark Davis, Chris Doyle and other strength experts we are allowing both 3-5 rep maxes and athletes to pick a weight and do as many reps as possible. We’ll use our conversion formula to calculate their max outs. This will allow for measurement of growth while keeping our athletes safe.
